how to treat pimples on your scalp

Like the rest of our skin, the scalp can have unwanted conditions too. There's the usual dandruff, itching and even allergic reactions. We must ensure to give our scalp the same wonderful care we give to our face. But, there's one condition that is extremely common, and can be very frustrating and painful: Pimples on the scalp.

Having to deal with pimples on the scalp and not knowing what causes them? Let's look at the following possible causes to solve the mystery.

cause #1 - build-up of dead skin

We all know, that pimples are caused by clogged pores. And it can be a result dead skin, oil and product build-up on the scalp. One solution to soothe this problem is by using a scalp scrub 1-2 times per week to exfoliate the scalp and remove some of that build-up.

Cause #2 - Hormone imbalance

Like our face, hormones play a huge role in acne on the scalp as well. Our hormones control oil production and acne bacteria on our skin, and they both can lead to an increase in pimples. If you think hormones are the reason for pimples on your scalp, consult your doctor or dermatologist to decipher the best treatment for you.

Cause #3 - lack of sleep and stress

When we’re stressed our face seems to instantly breakout! And this can also happen on the scalp too. Both stress and lack of sleep causes cortisol levels to increase, and may lead to an increase in oil production causing more clogged pores and acne. To remedy this, it's important to prioritize self-care and make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night. Create a relaxing hair care routine as part of your self-care!

Cause #4 - using the wrong products

One-product-fits-all approach is not the best way to go! There are shampoo and conditioner sets that may work wonders for one person while being too heavy and weighs down another persons' hair. If the shampoo you're using is too heavy for your hair, it might be due to product build-up which leads to clogged pores. Did you know that acne caused by your hair products is called acne cosmetica.

If you can’t figure out the cause of your pimples and feel like your hair is being weighed down, or a residue is being left on your hair after washing, it may be time to try switching up your shampoo and conditioner set.

Products that help

to conclude

Your scalp is full of hair follicles and oil glands. If the follicle or pore becomes clogged with dirt and oil, this can lead to acne. You can still get scalp acne even if you have good hygiene, but sweat, oil, and dirt buildup from improper or incomplete washing can lead to clogged pores.

Lots of times scalp pimples are from shampoo or other products. Just making a switch to your hair routine can get rid of the problem without any other treatment. Other times, scalp acne is a bit more complicated and needs other treatment. The outlook for scalp acne is good, but if it doesn’t get better with some of these changes, talk to your doctor.
